Biomedical engineering at Rutgers University was initially established in 1965 as a track within electrical engineering, offering M.S. degrees with a BME emphasis. In 1986, NJ formally chartered the Department of Biomedical Engineering as an independent entity within the School of Engineering with granting rights for M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. A third degree, Masters of Engineering (M.Eng), was approved in June 2012 in BME. The department developed its graduate program in collaboration with RWJ/UMDNJ to provide a strong foundation in biomedical and clinical sciences along with rigorous engineering training. Effective July 1, 2013, UMDNJ merged with Rutgers and became the Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences (RBHS). An Online M.Eng degree became offered in BME starting for Fall 2013, one of the very few online BME programs in the nation.
