Industrial Overview
The Rutgers University Biomedical Engineering
Industrial Internship Program (BEIIP) is designed to encourage industrial
input and participation into the development and training of a growing
population of talented biomedical engineers.
Our summer internship program matches undergraduate
and graduate students with companies in the local area, as well as
nationwide. The program is limited to declared BME majors in good
standing who have completed, at least, their sophomore year and graduate
students who have completed their first year of study by the beginning
of the internship.
Students follow a formal application and review
process and are matched with an industrial partner based on a number
of criteria including previous research experience, technical skills,
academic performance and, if requested, letters of recommendation.
The program works with participating companies
in various ways to select candidate interns:
• Company review of
the student profile tables and further analysis of student resumes
with requests to BEIIP for interviews of potential candidates. These
student interviews can be arranged to take place on Rutgers University
campus, or at the company’s site location, whichever is preferable.
• BEIIP/BME faculty review of project descriptions supplied
by company mentors for “best fit” with prospective interns
with potential candidate resumes sent to partner company for final
approval. Upon resume approval, student interviews can be arranged
to take place on Rutgers University campus, or at the company’s
site location, whichever is preferable.
• A combination of both BEIIP/Company student review and selection.
The program is very flexible. The BME department
is happy to work with companies individually to meet their specific
needs. The students and their mentors can define the particular internship
time duration as well as commencement and completion dates. The program
is designed to last approximately 8 weeks sometime between the end
of the spring semester (end of May) and the beginning of the fall
semester (beginning of September).
Students may be incorporated into ongoing company
summer internship programs and receive compensation from the company.
However, if industrial internships are not available through the company
and the company desires to set up a separate program, we will work
with the company to accommodate this contingency.
However the logistics are arranged, the program
promises to provide an effective way to locate and train motivated
students to fill immediate needs, as well as create a pipeline of
high quality talent for a future work force. Many of our students
create a lasting relationship with their internship partner that leads
to future employment and immediate future productivity.
