Message from the Chair

Welcome to the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Rutgers!

There is little doubt that the tremendous advances in medicine over the past few decades can be attributed to the exciting achievement and growth within the field of biomedical engineering. From the devices that allow for treatment through non-invasive procedures and restore mobility and function to body parts, to innovative materials that induce healing, to tools that function at the nano level, biomedical engineers are on the forefront, extending and improving quality of life for a global community.

At Rutgers Biomedical Engineering, our dedicated faculty of 23 educator/researchers is preparing students to be leaders of this movement. Our rigorous and comprehensive curriculum trains students with an eye towards solving problems at the intersection of engineering and life sciences. Outstanding BS, ME, MS, and PhD level training prepares students in critical areas of biomedical engineering and technology, including molecular, cellular, and nanosystems; bioengineering biomaterials and tissue engineering; biomechanics and rehabilitation engineering; physiologic systems and bioinstrumentation; and computational bioengineering and biomedical imaging.

Since merging in 2013 with the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey to establish Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences, BME has further expanded its collaborative programs in the areas of biomedical science and clinical science.

We are a dynamic department, always growing and searching for ways to expose our students to the issues they will face as engineers. I invite you to browse our website to learn more about our programs, research centers, and our community.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to the department. We look forward to hearing from you.
