The NIH supported Rutgers-UMDNJ Biotechnology Training Program, directed by Professors Martin Yarmush and Ann Stock, has been renewed for its sixth consecutive five-year cycle. The $2.1 NIH grant provides stipend and tuition support for 10 fellows and is matched by institutional sources at both Rutgers and Industry. The research programs of the training faculty cover a broad spectrum of problems, which fall under two major interdisciplinary research thrusts: 1) Genomics, Proteomics and Structural Biology and 2) Tissue Engineering, Regenerative Medicine, and Drug Delivery. The Biotechnology program offers several unique experiences: including a semester course entitled, 1) "Bioengineering in the Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Industries" (a comprehensive survey course taught exclusively by industrial faculty); 2) a full year course entitled, “Topics in Advanced Biotechnology", which is held every semester of graduate school discusses break-through technologies, professional skills, and career suitability for each student’s interests and talents; and 3) a 8-10 week summer industrial internship, which provides a sense of the culture and practice in industrial research settings.
