Rutgers NIH Biotechnology Training Program Renewed a Sixth Time

The Rutgers PhD Program in Biotechnology has been renewed by the NIH National Institutes of General Medical Sciences for a record sixth time (years 26-30). The 5-year award, totaling $1,987,080 provides 10 predoctoral fellowship awards per year. With matching university and industrial support, the program will be hosting 15 meritorious students annually, providing two years of financial support.

The program draws its students and faculty from biomedical engineering, chemical and biochemical engineering, chemistry and chemical biology, and 10 different life science graduate programs. In addition to a summer industrial internship, students take 3 program-specific courses: "Topics in Advanced Biotechnology I and II", "Bioengineering in the Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Industries," and "Innovation and Entrepreneurship for Science and Technology," led by experts from Rutgers and area companies.

The overall aim of the program is to train a select group of creative young investigators and leaders who are able to translate basic science discoveries into technology developments for the needs of industry, government, and society. Professors Martin Yarmush and Ann Stock are the directors of the program.
