The American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) recently inducted Department of Biomedical Engineering professors David Shreiber and Maribel Vazquez into its College of Fellows Class of 2020.
Election to the AIMBE College of Fellows is a prestigious professional distinction that is bestowed on the top two percent of medical and biological engineers in recognition of their outstanding contributions the field.
“This much-deserved recognition of professional achievement affirms the exceptional strength of our faculty and brings welcome visibility to the School of Engineering and Rutgers,” said Dean Thomas Farris in congratulating Shreiber and Vazquez.
The AIMBE honors BME associate professor Vazquez, who joined the BME faculty in 2019 for her “novel and creative use of microfluidics and tissue engineering to address retinal damage and vision loss.”
Her research portfolio includes sponsored projects focused on the development of bio-microtechnologies to investigate the individual and collective migration of glia during the development and regenerative repair of the visual, central, and peripheral nervous system.
Shreiber, who serves as professor and BME department chair, was recognized for his “innovative engineering strategies to advance our understanding of cellular and tissue injury, repair, and regeneration.”
His research interests ranging from brain and spinal cord injury biomechanics to neural tissue engineering have been supported with funding awards from private foundations, as well as state and federal agencies such as the National Institutes of Health, and the New Jersey Commissions on Brain Injury Research and Spinal Cord Research.
With its mission to recognize excellence, advance public understanding, and accelerate medical and biological innovation, AIMBE authoritatively advocates for the value of medical and biological engineering to society. While most AIMBE Fellows are from the United States, the College of Fellows inductees represent 34 countries, are employed in academia, industry, clinical practice, and government, and include three Nobel Prize laureates.
