BME Professor Joseph Freeman has been nominated and selected to be named as a Chancellor`s Scholar at Rutgers. The Chancellor`s Scholar initiative was created through the New Brunswick Strategic Plan to recognize truly outstanding and highly promising scholars at Rutgers University-New Brunswick. As a Chancellor`s Scholar, he will receive $5k towards his research account for innovative research initiatives and/or program development for up to five years.

BME graduating senior and new MS student Wilai Kosol has been selected for the Douglass Residential College Challenge Award which is given to a Douglass student who has taken risks and persevered in a challenging academic environment, a community service-oriented endeavor, or a co-curricular activity.

Earlier this year, BME PhD student Maria Qadri's research was featured in the form of a graphic article for a three-part series on How Big Data Is Transforming Health Care for Pacific Standard. Using illustration the series features a comic book version of Qadri in her research exploring how advances in tracking technology, data analysis, and automation offer significant improvements in medical treatment and quality of life.

BME graduate student, Ayesha Aijaz, has been awarded a 1-year, Schlumberger Foundation "Faculty for the Future" Fellowship to pursue PhD studies on developing a cell-based therapy for chronic and acute wounds. The Schlumberger Foundation through this program supports women scientists from developing countries to strengthen the teaching and research faculties of their home institutions. Ayesha is advised by Professor Ronke Olabisi.

Varun Arvind, a biomedical engineering junior, was recently named a 2015 Goldwater Scholar, joining only 259 other students out of more than 1,200 nationwide nominees to earn this prestigious award. The only engineering student from New Jersey receiving the award this year, his research focuses on stem cell differentiation and how to replicate its effects to help osteopenia victims or those with traumatic injuries.

BME PhD student Kathryn Drzewiecki has recently been awarded a $15k P.E.O (Philanthropic Educational Organization) Scholar Award. The P.E.O. Sisterhood is interested in bringing increased opportunities for higher education to women. The P.E.O. Scholar Award was established in 1991 to provide substantial merit-based awards for women who are pursuing a doctoral level degree at an accredited college or university.

Michelle Sempkowski, a BME PhD student, has been awarded a 2-year, $50,000 fellowship from the New Jersey Commission on Cancer Research. Michelle is currently studying a new binding geometry on liposomes that has the potential to selectively and effectively target and kill cancer cells with low or too low receptor expression. Michelle is advised by Professor Stavroula Sofou.

Biomedical engineering faculty member Jeffrey D. Zahn (pictured on left), Ronald P. Hart from Rutgers Department of Cell Biology and Neuroscience (CBN), and Zhiping Pang from Rutgers Department of Neuroscience and Cell Biology and the Child Health Institute of New Jersey have received a National Insitute of Health/National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) Cutting-Edge Basic Research Awards (CEBRA) R21 grant entitled High Throughput Multicompartment Culture Chambers to Develop Neurocircuit Models of Addiction Risk. The grant is $383,873 over 2 years.

Professor Ioannis (Yannis) Androulakis has been elected to the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) College of Fellows. AIMBE`s College of Fellows consists of outstanding leaders, engineers, entrepreneurs, and innovators in medical and biological engineering. The induction of the Class of 2015 AIMBE Fellows took place on Monday, March 16, 2015 at the National Academy of Sciences.
