Joachim Kohn and Jared Bushman from the New Jersey Center for Biomaterials andDavid Shreiber and Jeffrey Zahn from Biomedical Engineering were awarded a 3-year, $593,000 grant from the New Jersey Commission on Spinal Cord Research. The multi-disciplinary team aims to design and develop novel microelectrodes that limit gliosis for use in Brain-Machine Interfaces.

The International Union of Societies for Biomaterials Science and Engineering (IUSBSE) has elected Professor Prabhas Moghe as a Fellow of Biomaterials Science and Engineering (FBSE). Professor Moghe was cited for his pioneering research and educational leadership in advanced materials biology with applications to biotechnology and biomedicine. The induction ceremony took place on June 1, 2012 at the Ninth World Biomaterials Congress held in Chengdu, China.

Professor Anant Madabhushi has been awarded a Proof of Concept Grant from the Office of Technology Commercialization, Rutgers University for his application entitled "Computerized Decision Support for Prostate Cancer Detection and Treatment via Multi-parametric MRI". For this project Dr. Madabhushi and his team will be developing a prototype system for identifying regions corresponding to cancer on high resolution MRI images of the prostate.

The Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) and the Center for Innovative Ventures for Emerging Technologies (CIVET) have been awarded a 5-year $216,000 grant from the NIH for a program entitled "Merging Innovation, Translational Medicine, and Entrepreneurship in Biomedical Engineering Senior Design". The program will offer students didactic clinical and entrepreneurship immersion elements, and provide support to outstanding senior design projects that include clinical collaborators and a pathway to translation and commercialization.

Ying Li, a BME graduate student in Dr. Li Cai laboratory, has been approved and funded for a total cost of $60,000 for two years (June 15, 2012 - June 30, 2014) for a New Jersey Center for Spinal Cord Research (NJCSCR) for her project entitled "Molecular mechanism of Notch1 expression in spinal cord development and post-SCI response".

Srivathsan Prabhu, BME/LCIB sophomore has been awarded a 2012-2013 Aresty RA position in LCIB to work on a project entitled "Characterization of the elastic properties of the prostate". Sri has and will continue to work under the mentorship of Professor Anant Madabhushi with some guidance by Professor Madabhushi`s Post-Doc, Dr. Rusu.

BME Graduate Faculty Member Joachim Kohn has been featured in the Monday, April 30, 2012 article of the Star Ledger for his work in the NJ Center for Biomaterials with polymers and stents. Eileen Hwuang, BME/LCIB sophmore was awarded the first prize at the 2012 SOE Research Symposium for her poster entitled "Anisotropic Smoothing Regularization in Thirion`s Demons algorithm for Medical Image Registration". Eileen was awarded a $250 cash prize. She is mentored by Professor Anant Madabhushi.

Professor Prabhas Moghe has been awarded the annual Engineering Governing Council (EGC) BME Teaching Excellency Award. He was one of the top 5 candidates nominated by the Biomedical Engineering Undergraduates and received the most votes by the BME student body during the EGC elections that ran in the week of April 9th. This award will be given at the annual EGC Leadership Conference on April 29th at 2pm.
