What started as a simple transaction—buying collagen for soft-tissue engineering research—is now a commercially viable license for Rutgers and the School of Engineering. Since 2011, biomedical engineering doctoral candidate, Kathryn Drzewiecki, under the guidance of professor David Shreiber, has been researching and developing collagen modifications to expand its use in medicine.

Second-year student Yoliem Miranda Alarcon was awarded an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship, which provides tuition and a $34,000 stipend for three years. Yoliem is developing new, bioactive, collagen-based scaffolds with Professor David Shreiber.

Professor Martin L. Yarmush is among 84 new members and 22 foreign associates elected to the National Academy of Engineering (NAE). This brings the total U.S. membership to 2,281 and the number of foreign members to 249.

BME PhD candidate Antoinette Nelson was awarded a 2017 NSF East Asia and Pacific Summer Institutes (EAPSI) Fellowship. Antoinette will spend the summer in China conducting a portion of her thesis work involving the development of a nano-based colorectal pre-exposure prophylaxis for HIV. She will be hosted by Dr. Lee Jia at Fuzhou University and Dr. Xing-Jie Liang at the National Center for Nanoscience and Technology of China. She is currently advised by Professor Patrick J. Sinko.

A patent was issued to Professor Martin Yarmush and colleagues from L’Oreal and Hurel Corp. entitled, "Immune System Modeling and Devices” (US patent number 953506). The invention describes the development of an allergy-on-a-chip device which can be used to detect and classify chemicals that cause an immune reaction.

Rutgers engineering faculty Jeffrey Zahn and David Shreiber (BME) and Hao Lin and Jerry Shan (MAE) have partnered with a life science company to model and develop transdermal gene and drug delivery systems. The research is supported by a 4-year, $1,088,806 contract.
