Professors Martin Yarmush and colleagues, Dr. Berk Usta from Harvard, and Dr. Alex Golberg from Tel Aviv University, were awarded a 2-year $120,000 US-Israel BSF Grant to develop a nonchemical wound disinfection process using pulsed electric field technology.

Professor Berthiaume Receives NIH Grant to Develop a Liver Bioreactor With Improved Oxygen Transport
Professor Francois Berthiaume and his collaborator Professor Andre Palmer at Ohio State University have received a 4-year $1.4M R01 grant from the National Institutes of Health. The goal of the project is to use oxygen carriers to develop a new type of liver cell bioreactor that emulates the functions of the actual liver organ. This device could be used as an extra life-saving therapy for patients who have acute liver failure as well as a bridge for patients awaiting a liver transplant.

BME PhD student Cosmas Mwikirize received a travel award from Fulbright Foreign Student Program to attend the 19th International Conference on Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Interventions (MICCAI-2016) which will be held in Athens, Greece. Cosmas proposed a new framework for the enhancement of needle images from ultrasound data based on modeling the signal propagation in the tissue. MICCAI is the highest impact international conference that covers topics such as medical image analysis, biomedical imaging and robotics, and image guided interventions.

A patent was issued to Professor Martin Yarmush and colleagues entitled, "Blood Substitutes and Uses Thereof” (Patent number 9387152). The invention describes the development of a short term blood substitute in which hemoglobin is maintained substantially in the reduced form of hemoglobin as opposed to the oxidized methemoglobin form through inclusion of an oxido-reductase enzyme and reducing agents within a vesicle with the hemoglobin.

Chancellor Edwards' office has awarded a grant of $588,812 to Evelyn Erenrich, Director of the Center for Graduate Recruitment, Retention and Diversity (GR2aD) and Assistant Dean, and David Shreiber, Professor of Biomedical Engineering, to expand the Summer Undergraduate Pathway to Excellence at Rutgers Graduate Fellowship Program (SUPER-Grad).

Dr. Joseph Freeman and postdoctoral fellow, Dr. Tracy Scott, participated this summer as mentors in the Liberty Science Center “Partners in Science” Program, an intensive eight-week summer science research program for highly motivated and intelligent high school students. Dr. Kristen Labazzo and Dr. Freeman were seeking ways to create summer research opportunities for high school students and selected Ms. Niharika (Neha) Boinpally, a rising senior at West Windsor-Plainsboro High School North, who was accepted into the Partners in Science Program.

The REU Site in Cellular Bioengineering was renewed for another 3 years with a grant of $412,491 from the National Science Foundation. The REU aims to provide an immersive research experience coupled with professional development activities for students who traditionally lack these opportunities, including under-represented minorities, students who are in the first generation in their family to attend college, and students from colleges that primarily serve undergraduates and do not engage in research. Since 2010, the REU has hosted 68 summer scholars.

Professors Martin Yarmush and Susan Engelhardt have received a 1-year $84,310 grant from the NIH to develop a new course entitled, “Professional Preparedness in Biotechnology”. The course will cover a myriad of topics including: the life and biomedical sciences ecosystem; managing communications; organizations and partnerships; project planning and management; customer focus; financial management; operations management; risk management, quality and safety; and regulatory processes.

Professors Martin Yarmush and Ramsey Foty have received a 1-year $85,910 grant from the NIH to develop a new course entitled, “Interdisciplinary Research Training in Biostatistics: Enhancing Reproducibility”.
