Plans underway for technology hub, expanded medical training and more
Rutgers University and Botswana leaders today signed an agreement to launch the Botswana-Rutgers Knowledge Collaborative, a joint initiative to exchange knowledge through technology and develop programs that help Botswana address its strategic development goals as the country emerges as a regional hub of southern Africa.

Hitachi Chemical Advanced Therapeutics Solutions, LLC (HCATS), a U.S. subsidiary of Hitachi Chemical Co. Ltd. that engages in contract manufacturing and development of regenerative medicine products, and Rutgers University–New Brunswick’s School of Engineering today announced a collaboration to launch a graduate-level course, “Integrative Molecular and Cellular Bioengineering.” The new course launched this Fall 2018 semester, with select employees of HCATS included among the students participating in the course.

Three BME faculty have received $100,000 TechAdvance to support the development of their technology and intellectual property. Professor Ronke Olabisi is developing hydrogel encapsulated cells as factories to heal wounds. Professor Noshir Langrana is developing anti-adhesive biomaterials. Professor Ilker Hacihaliloglu is developing machine learning methods for real-time needle localization from ultrasound data.

The Department of Biomedical Engineering welcomes associate professor Maribel Vazquez who joins Rutgers Engineering with professional experience in combining microfabrication with cell biology for human health. Her research projects develop microfluidic systems for neural cell-based repair and have been funded by the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, and Department of Defense.

For the 11th year in a row, the graduate students in BME held a figure competition where BME faculty gave cash prizes to the top 3 figures. The figures consisted of creative scientific "images" that are fun to see and were voted on at our Annual Holiday Party on December 13th. Student winners are:

The Biomedical Engineering Department held its first very first student-run BME Symposium on December 13, 2018. The Biomedical Engineering Student Society (BESS) spearheaded the symposium including abstract submissions, choosing if students give a poster presentation or podium talk, as well as many other logistics for the event. 56 undergraduate and graduate students presented their research posters, 11 graduate and post docs gave podium talks, there were 2 keynote speakers and a vendor show featuring 4 companies. Each presenter received a personalized certificate of participation. The

Distinguished professor and former chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, Noshir Langrana was inducted as a 2018 Fellow of the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES), during the organization’s annual October meeting.
According to Langrana, this recognition is among the highest honors he’s received over the course of his career.
“I’ve been a part of the BMES for a long time and while I am personally pleased to be honored by BMES, I am especially proud to be recognized alongside so many talented biomedical engineering professionals,” he said.
