The EWNJ Board of Directors was pleased to award Yoliem with a $5,000 award to assist her in achieving her academic goals. Yoliem is advised by Professor David Shreiber.

A TechAdvance award of $100,000 has been granted to a team led by Li Cai. The funding, which is through the Rutgers Office of Research and Economic Development, is to develop a gene therapy technology for spinal cord injury.

The Philadelphia Section of the STLE is pleased to award a $1,000 scholarship to Fernando Antonio Rebolledo Uscanga, a third-year PhD candidate in biomedical engineering working with Prof. Jeffrey Zahn at Rutgers University.
Rebolledo Uscanga’s work is focused on applying microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) into the biomedical field. In lieu of the more commonly used silicon and ceramic MEMS devices, this work used vapor-deposition of parylene membranes over fabricated electrodes for electrostatic actuation of the membrane as the fabrication technology.

Professor Martin Yarmush was awarded a 2-year $8,000 grant as part of the Rutgers Global Grant Competition. The award entitled, “Investigating the Allergic Potential of Alternative Food Sources for Safe Global Consumption” is a joint effort among Professors Martin Yarmush, Rene Schloss, and Anil Shrirao from Rutgers BME, and Dr. Alex Golberg, from Tel Aviv University in Israel.

Christopher Lowe will receive the 2018-19 Outstanding School of Engineering Graduate Student Award, which recognizes one PhD graduate for accomplishments in scholarship, teaching, and service. In addition to outstanding scholarship towards the development of biomaterial platforms for targeted drug delivery, Chris was also an important inaugural contributor to the Rutgers iJOBS program and a long-standing student leader for AIChE nationally. Chris was advised by Professor David Shreiber.

Erin Kelley, an undergraduate in the School of Arts and Sciences, has been selected for a Henry Rutgers Scholar Award for her independent research into how vinculin - a protein that helps link integrins to the cytoskeleton - changes in neurons in culture. Erin is advised by BME Professor Nada Boustany, Dr. Rene Schloss, and Cell Biology & Neuroscience Professor Bonnie Firestein.

The team of Samuel Langlois, Chirsteen Abdalla, Joshua Posen and George Durrant has been selected as a finalist for an NSF-sponsored design competition at the upcoming Summer Biomechanics, Bioengineering, and Biotransport (SB3C) Meeting in Silver Springs, PA. The seniors submitted their senior design project, "Design and Optimization Of A Finger-By-Finger Vibrational Therapy," which is supervised by Professor Gary Drzewiecki.

Professor Martin Yarmush was awarded 2 grants from the New Jersey Commission on Spinal Cord Research. The first is a 1-year $200,000 award to continue development of a method to treat spinal cord injury using encapsulated mesenchymal stromal cells that have been genetically modified to secrete enzymes that degrade proteoglycans to reduce glial scarring and suppress host inflammation.
