How doctoral student Matthew Tamasi found himself studying with a childhood neighbor As a boy, Matthew Tamasi ENG ’18 loved spending time in the summers at his grandparents’ Brick, New Jersey beach house – and playing with some kids next door. These kids just happened to be the younger sisters of Adam Gormley, an assistant professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Tamasi’s doctoral advisor.

BME PhD student Alex Burr has received an Outstanding Poster Presentation Award at the 23rd Annual Meeting of the American Society of Gene and Cell Therapy (ASGCT) where over 1300 posters were presented virtually on May 12-15th.  Reviewers are asked to select a winner in each category based on quality of research, poster outline, and clarity of the presentation.  Her poster titled “Circadian-Triggered Gene Therapy for Hypoparathyroidism: A Step Toward Physiological Gene Switches" displayed data from a disease model mouse study showing how to achieve therapeutic levels of pa

BME PhD student Shilpaa Mukundan has been awarded a 2020-2021 PreDoctoral Leadership Development Academy (PDLA) Fellowship. Biomedical engineering professor and department chair David Shreiber was named a 2020 recipient of the Rutgers University Leaders in Faculty Diversity Award, which recognizes  excellence in diversity and inclusion. The award is sponsored by the Committee to Advance Our Common Purposes (CACP) and honors faculty, students, and staff from across the university. Shreiber, who was nominated by faculty colleagues, was recognized for his commitment to diversity and inclusion in the STEM fields.

The Department of Defense has awarded a three-year, $500,000 Idea Development Award to Professor Francois Berthiaume entitled "Hemoglobin, Heme, and Iron Scavenging for Improved Burn Injury Outcomes." The goal of the project is to develop topical therapies to improve wound healing in burn patients, and is done in collaboration with Dr. Andre Palmer at Ohio State University.

Through the National Science Foundation (NSF) Grant Opportunities for Academic Liaison with Industry (GOALI), Nada Boustany received a $ 92,910 supplement to her current NSF award to advance a Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging Microscopy (FLIM) system for FRET applications.

A patent was issued to Professor Martin Yarmush entitled, "Methods and compositions for preserving tissues and organs” (US Patent number: 10575515). The invention describes methods and compositions to determine the viability of an organ for transplantation and other medical purposes. One aspect of the invention relates to a method for assessing the viability of an organ by measuring the energy parameters to determine the energy level of the organ by determining the stored cellular energy (e.g., ATP levels), and/or energy consumption over a particular time period of viability.
