BME, LCIB Graduate Student Rachel Sparks has been awarded a $825 travel award from the IEEE Intl. Symposium on Biomedical Imaging (ISBI) committee. This money will allow Rachel to travel to Rotterdam, Netherlands to present her work on "Integrated Framework for Quantitating 3D Shape Differences: Evaluating Prostate Morphometry". These awards were competitive and only 10 were awarded. Rachel is advised by Professor Anant Madabhushi. komik video

Work by recent Graduate Students Najeeb Chowdhury and Jon Chappelow as well as current PhD student Rob Toth have been selected as a "Editors Picks" for the journal of Medicl Physics. The work is on "Concurrent segmentation of the prostate on MRI and CT via linked statistical shape models for radiotherapy planning". These students were/are advised by Professor Anant Madabhushi.

The Rutgers Board of Governors has approved the following BME faculty promotions:  Professor Jeffrey Zahn will be promoted to Associate Professor with Tenure on July 1, 2012.  Professor Charles Roth will be promoted to Full Professor I on July 1, 2012.

Professor Martin Yarmush has been awarded a 1-year, $100K grant from US Army Medical Research Agency for a project entitled, "Development of Immunotherapy-Laden Scaffolds for the Prevention of Traumatic Injury Infection". The overall goal of the project is to develop an implantable dendritic cell-based alginate construct that will serve as a lymphoid-like organ with immunoactive and antimicrobial properties.

BME graduate student Dana Mastrovito has been awarded a 3-year NSF Graduate Research Fellowship. Dana is currently advised by Professor Stephen Hanson of Psychology-Rutgers Newark Campus. Dana has been working with Dr. Hanson at the new Rutgers University Brain Imaging Center on developing parameter free clustering algorithms for functional brain MR images.

Professor Martin Yarmush and collaborators Professors Rene Schloss and David Shreiber have been awarded a 3-year, $540,000 grant from the New Jersey Commission on Brain Injury Research for a project entitled, "Mesenchymal Stem Cells as Traumatic Brain Injury Therapeutics".

Joseph Galero, BME/LCIB Senior received an honorable mention for his application to the NSF Graduate Research fellowship program. Joe is currently advised by Professor Anant Madabhushi. Joe has been working with Dr. Madabhushi in developing texture based classifier schemes for identifying anaplastic medullobastomas from digitized histologic sections of brain tumors.

BME/LCIB Class of 2012 Senior Elaine Yu has been awarded a 3-year NSF Graduate Research Fellowship to pursue a doctoral degree at a program and institution of her choosing. Elaine is currently advised by Professor Anant Madabhushi. Elaine has been working with Dr. Madabhushi on developing computerized image detection methods for prostate cancer on whole mount histopathology.

BME Class of 2012 senior Alyssa Kosmides has been selected to receive a prestigious 2012 National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) Fellowship. Her selection recognizes her outstanding abilities and accomplishments, as well as her potential to contribute to strengthening the vitality of the US science and engineering enterprise. The fellowship will provide full 3-year support towards her graduate studies.

Professor John Li has been elected Chapter Chair of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology (EMB) Princeton/Central Jersey Section. EMB serves the biomedical engineering community, medical devices and pharmaceutical industries with joint seminars and professional interaction.
