BME PhD Student Jeremy Scheff has been awarded a University and Bevier Graduate Fellowship for 2012-2013. This is a Graduate School of New Brunswick prestigious fellowships given to advanced PhD students. Jeremy works in the laboratory of ProfessorIoannis Androulakis.

The NSF-sponsored REU Site in Cellular Bioengineering: From Biomaterials to Stem Cells was renewed via a 3-year, $360,000 award. The program will be led by PI David Shreiber and co-PI Charles Roth and will continue to provide research opportunities for a diverse population of students to whom these experiences are not typically available.

BME PhD student Rachel Sparks was awarded Cum Laude (Best Poster) at the SPIE Medical Imaging meeting 2012 in San Diego, CA for her poster entitled "Gleason grading of prostate histology utilizing statistical shape model of manifolds (SSMM)". Rachel Sparks is advised by Dr. Anant Madabhushi.

The Rutgers undergraduate chapter of Alpha Eta Mu Beta, the biomedical engineering honor society has been awarded the "Society of the Month Award" by the Engineering Governing Council. They held several events last semester, including initiating a BME Tutoring / "Office Hours" program and the Finals Snacks Sale, and upcoming events include a resume and personal statement writing workshop and the first annual BME Olympics. They have just received national recognition this year and will be featured in EGC`s December/January newsletter.

Research performed in Professor Martin Yarmush`s lab at Rutgers University and Massachusetts General Hospital has yielded a novel strategy to protect the liver from drug-induced injury. The paper receiving advance online publication in the journal "Nature Biotechnology", reports that inhibiting gap junction communication can protect against damage caused by liver-toxic drugs such as acetaminophen.

Work on a microfluidic bioreactor for increased active retrovirus output was spotlighted in The January 2008 issue of the Chemical Biology supplement of the Royal Society of Chemistry. In this study, a team led by Professor Martin Yarmush describes a novel microdevice for the continuous production of retroviral vectors in a commonly available packaging cell line.

Professors David Shreiber and Marianthi Ierapetritou have been awarded the SoE 2012 Outstanding Faculty Award and Faculty of the Year Award, respectively. The formal recognitions will be confirmed at the Medal of Excellence dinner on February 24, 2012.
