Nir Nativ, a 4th year BME PhD student and IGERT Fellow working with Professor Martin Yarmush, was awarded the "Stem Cell IGERT Outreach Award" at the 2011 Stem Cell IGERT Symposium on Friday, November 11th at the Busch Campus Center.

Professor Anant Madabhushi won the first prize for his elevator pitch "Image based risk score (Ibris) predictor of disease aggressiveness in ER+ breast cancers" at Rutgers Entrepreneurship Day. Professor Madabhushi edged out 9 other finalists (selected from a total of 60 entries) to win a cash prize. The competition was sponsored by the law firm SNR Denton.

Pallavi Tiwari, a 4th year BME/LCIB PhD student has been awarded a travel award by SciWomen, the office for the promotion of Women in Science, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). The travel awards were given to five female graduate students in STEM. The award will help partially defray part of the costs of Pallavi`s travel to the prostate cancer imaging workshop which she attended in Toronto in September 2011 to present her paper entitled "Weighted Combination of multi-parametric MRI for Evaluating Radiation Therapy Changes in the prostate".

Research performed in the laboratory of Professor Martin Yarmush on the encapsulation of mesenchymal stromal cells as a therapeutic intervention post acute spinal cord injury is spotlighted on the cover of the November issue of Biotechnology and Bioengineering. Lead author on the work is BME graduate student Jeffrey Barminko, with contributions from Keck center postdoctoral researcher Jae Hwan Kim and Professor Martin Grumet as well as BME graduate student Andrea Gray and Professor Rene Schloss.

George Lee, a 4th year BME/LCIB PhD student has been awarded a $64K, 2 year pre-doctoral training grant from the Department of Defense for his project entitled "Comparing Proteomic, Histological Biomarkers for Biochemical Failure Among African Americans and Caucasians Following Radical Prostatectomy". George will be working on this project under the mentorship of Professor Anant Madabhushi and will be supported by clinical co-mentors (Dr. Michael Feldman, Dr. Steve Master, and Dr. John Tomaszewski) from the University of Pennsylvania and Buffalo.

Professor Stavroula Sofou received a 4-year, $720,000 Research Scholar Grant from the American Cancer Society to design and evaluate a targeted liposomal antivascular alpha-particle therapeutic approach for the treatment of cancer. Professor Martin Yarmushserves as a consultant on this project, and the Center for Innovative Ventures of Emerging Technologies (CIVET) will assist the team in translating their work to the industrial and clinical arenas.

On September 16, 2011, NSF awarded Rutgers University a three year $2.3M MRI grant that will bring a "first of its kind" nanoscale ion beam facility to Rutgers campus. The principal investigator is Professor Gustafsson. Co-PIs on the project are Eva Andrei, Laura Fabris, Adrian B. Mann , and Leonard C. Feldman.
