BME juniors Anthony Kulesa and Dipen Patel have been chosen to join Phi Beta Kappa at Rutgers. Being elected to Phi Beta Kappa is one of the signal honors for high achieving liberal arts undergraduates. Anthony has a double major with BME and Chinese. Dipen has a double major with BME and Economics.

Professor Anant Madabhushi has been appointed guest editor for a TBME Letters Special Issue on Multi-Scale/Resolution Signal and Image Analysis. The Special issue is in response to 40+ papers in EEG, ECG, and Heart rate variability analysis as well as MRI, multi-modality imaging, and pathology image analysis. The special issue will be published in December 2011.

BME undergraduate seniors Malav Desai, Mason Hui, Namrata Kulkarni, and Prerana Pradhan have won the Second Place Award of $350 for Best Design in the Senior Design Competition at the Northeast Bioengineering Conference held at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Friday, April 1, 2011. Their Design Project is titled "Design of an On-Stage Incubator". The project is advised by Professor Noshir Langrana and BME research faculty member Devendra Verma.

BME, LCIB Graduate Student Ajay Basavanhally has been awarded a $300 travel award from the IEEE Intl. Symposium on Biomedical Imaging (ISBI) committee. This money will allow Ajay to travel to Chicago to present his work on "A BOOSTED CLASSIFIER FOR INTEGRATING MULTIPLE FIELDS OF VIEW: BREAST CANCER GRADING IN HISTOPATHOLOGY". These awards were competitive. Ajay is advised by Professor Anant Madabhushi.

BME, LCIB Graduate Students Shannon Agner, George Lee, Satish Viswanath, Akshay Shridar, and Ajay Basavanhally have been awarded conference travel awards from the Graduate School of New Brunswick to help defray some of the costs for the IEEE ISBI and ISMRM conferences that was held in March and for May 2011, respectively. These students are advised by Dr. Anant Madabhushi.

BME MD, PhD student Shannon Agner and CBE PhD student Carolyn Waite are the 2011 recipients of the SoE "Outstanding Student Award". The winners will be recognized at the Medal of Excellence Dinner on April 15 and also at the SoE Convocation on May 15. This award is given to PhD students who have demonstrated outstanding service, research and training for their PhD's. Shannon is advised by Professor Anant Madabhushi and Carolyn by Professor Charles Roth.

BME professor Prabhas Moghe(PI) and BME Graduate Faculty member Kathryn Uhrich(co-PI) were awarded an NIH grant on nanolipoblockers by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) for 4 years at $2.3M. The proposal is to design synthetic counter-ligands for repressing "athero/inflammatory" processes related to atherosclerosis. Bill Welsh is also a collaborator. The proposed studies will directly impact graduate students: Daniel Lewis (CBE), Kubra Kamisoglu (CBE), Li Gu (CCB) and postdocs: Dr. Adam York (BME), Dr. Dawanne Poree (CCB), and Dr.

Pratik Patel, a 3rd year BME, LCIB undergraduate student has been accepted to the RISE program (Research Internships in Science and Engineering) through the German Research Foundation and awarded a research scholarship of $2500. This twelve week research internship will take place in Germany. RISE is a highly competitive, international program which only accepts a small percentage of the students that apply. Pratik is advised by Professor Anant Madabhushi.

LCIB, BME graduate student Satish Viswanath has been featured by the Canadian Press in an article entitled "Study finds most Indian graduate students in the US want to use their degrees back home". Satish is mentored by Professor Anant Madabhushi.
