The Board of Governors at Rutgers announced the promotions for this year effective July 2010. - Francois Berthiaume received tenure at Associate Professor rank. - Anant Madabhushi is promoted to Associate Professor with tenure. - Troy Shinbrot is promoted to the Full Professor rank. We congratulate them for their promotions!

BME PhD graduate student Jeremy Scheff won a competitive travel award to present his work at the upcoming 10th IEEE International Conference on Bioinformatics and Bioengineering. Jeremy's work focuses on the implications of diurnal variability and chronic stress on systemic inflammation. He is advised by Professor Ioannis Androulakis.

BME graduate student Minoosh (Kim) Moradi has been awarded a Rutgers Academy for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Program (RASTL) fellowship for 2010/2011. The RASTL program includes teaching seminars, courses, and a nominal stipend to help defray research expenses. Minoosh is currently a TA in the department and works in the laboratory of Professor William Craelius.

Professor Helen Buettner has been selected as the recipient of the 2010 WEPAN (Women in Engineering ProActive Network) University Change Agent Award. The award is a reflection of the ever-increasing dedication and enthusiasm and your desire to create an environment where women and girls are welcomed and appreciated in the engineering community. The award will presented at the annual WEPAN conference in April in Baltimore, Maryland.

BME PhD graduate student Shannon Agner has been awarded a GSNB conference travel award to help defray some of her costs for her conference in Stockholm Sweden on May 1-7. Shannon is presenting a poster for the Annual Meeting of the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine. Her poster is "Distinguishing Molecular Subtypes of Breast Cancer Based on Computer-aided Diagnosis of DCE-MRI". Shannon is advised by Professor Anant Madabhushi.

BME graduate student Er Liu from the Moghe laboratory has been selected to receive the 2010 Society for Biomaterials STAR (Student Travel Achievement Recognition) Award for his paper: "High content imaging based mapping of stem cell phenotypes on polymeric biomaterials." This award by the Education and Professional Development Committee of the Society of Biomaterials recognizes outstanding student contribution to research and will be conferred in Seattle.

BME/CBE professor Ioannis Androulakis and BME graduate faculty member Marianthi Ierapetritou recently received a 3-year $330K award from the Office on Naval Research to pursue their research activities focused on modeling the complexities of biofuel combustion. Their work aims at the development of novel methods for the analysis, representation and reduction of complex reaction mechanisms and exploring their incorporation in realistic computational fluid dynamics simulations.

LCIB and BME PhD students, Pallavi Tiwari and Shannon Agner, have been selected to participate in the CRA-W 2010 Grad Cohort for Women in Computing Research on April 23-24, 2010 in Bellevue, WA. The purpose of the CRA-W's Grad Cohort Program is to increase the ranks of senior women in computing by building and mentoring nationwide communities of women during their graduate studies. Funds for Pallavi`s and Shannon`s participation are being provided by Microsoft Inc., Google Inc., and Dr. Kathryn Uhrich, Dean of Math and Physical Sciences, Rutgers University.

BME PhD graduate student Robert Pasternack has been awarded a Graduate School of New Brunswick Louis Bevier Dissertation Fellowship for the 2010/2011 academic year. The fellowship carries a stipend and tuition remission. Robert works in the laboratory of professor Nada Boustany and we congratulate him for this prestigious fellowship. Only 12 students are awarded this fellowship per year in the university.

Dr. Madabhushi has been invited to join the editorial board of the open access journal BMC Cancer. BMC Cancer publishes original peer-reviewed research articles in all aspects of cancer research, including the pathophysiology, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancers. The journal welcomes submissions concerning molecular and cellular biology, genetics, epidemiology, and clinical trials. The journal's current impact factor is 3.08.
