Prof. Babis Kalodimos have been selected as the recipient of the 2011 Michael and Kate Barany Award for Young Investigator by Biophysical Society. He is recognized for his work using NMR spectroscopy, combined with other biophysical methodologies, to determine the mechanisms underlying the functionality of large protein machineries. The award will be presented at the Annual Meeting in Baltimore, Maryland, March 5-9.

Ongoing work in Dr. Madabhushi's lab on developing computerized image analysis methods for identifying aggressive prostate cancers on MRI was recently featured in a press release. Dr. Madabhushi along with BME graduate student Pallavi Tiwari have been working with Dr. John Kurhanewicz at the University of California San Francisco to develop techniques for identifying high grade prostate cancers using a combination of magnetic resonance spectroscopy and T2-w imaging.

Dr. Madabhushi was named a Coulter fellow at the Wallace Coulter Foundation meeting in Fort Lauderdale, FL on August 10, 2010. Dr. Madabhushi is the first Coulter fellow from Rutgers University and was recognized for his translational work on automated detection of prostate cancer from MRI.

Dr's Madabhushi (PI: Rutgers), Feleppa (PI, Riverside Research), Rofsky (PI, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston), and Cai (PI, GE) have been awarded a 5 year, $3.4 million, multi-institutional, Industrial-Academic partnership NIH R01 grant entitled "Prostate-cancer Imaging by Combined Ultrasound and Magnetic-resonance Parameters". This is Professor Madabhushi's second Industrial-Academic partnership NIH R01 grant, and complements his ongoing NIH R01 grant with UPENN and Siemens on "Software for Radiology-Pathology fusion for prostate cancer diagnosis".

Professor Martin Yarmush and Professor Anat Herskovits of Tel Aviv University have received a $60,000 grant from the US - Israel Binational Science Foundation for their proposal entitled, "Live Inflammatory Responses to L. monocytogenes". The goal of the project is to apply a novel high throughput living cell array system to characterize activation mechanisms of innate immune signaling pathways by L. monocytogenes. The U.S.-Israel Binational Science Foundation promotes scientific relations between the U.S.

The IEEE Educational Activities Board (EAB) voted to recognize Professor Evangelia Micheli-Tzanakou's exceptional achievements in continuing education activities by awarding her the 2010 IEEE Educational Activities Board Meritorious Achievement Award in Continuing Education with the following citation: "for vision and leadership in establishing the IEEE Biometrics Certification Program". The Rutgers-UMDNJ Biotechnology PhD Training Program has been renewed for a record fifth time (years 21-25). The 5-year award, totaling $1,527,190 provides 8 pre-doctoral fellowship awards per year, and is matched by 3 fellowships from Rutgers and 2 fellowships from UMDNJ. This award started in 1989 and is funded through the NIH. The aim of the program is to train a new breed of creative investigators who are able to translate basic science discoveries into technology developments for the needs of society, government, and industry.

Professor David Shreiber has received a 3-year $495,000 award from the NJCBIR for his proposal, entitled "Evaluation of genipin as a multi-potent therapeutic agent following brain injury." The goal of the project is to test the effects of genipin - a natural metabolite extracted from the Gardenia Jasminoides - in organotypic and in vivo models of brain injury. Professor Barclay Morrison (BME, Columbia University) is a collaborator.

For the eighth year in a row, articles in the Annual Review of Biomedical Engineering (ARBE) were cited more often than papers in any of its peer journals, according to ISI's 2009 Journal Citation Report, giving it the highest Impact Factor in its peer group. The ARBE had an Impact Factor of 11.235 placing it #1 in the category "Engineering, Biomedical," of 59 journals, and #1 among all engineering journals (840 in total).
