Professors Bill Craelius and Troy Shinbrot have been awarded $40,000 by Mathworks Inc. to develop Matlab-based course materials in Biomedical Engineering. These materials will consist of stand-alone modules dealing with simulations of biomechanics, cellular dynamics, and modeling of biological problems such as genetic control networks, disease progression, and image processing.

Sudha Karthigeyan, a 2nd year BME, LCIB undergraduate student has been accepted to the UROP International program (Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program) and awarded a research scholarship of $2500. This ten week research internship will take place in Aachen, Germany and the project will focus on evaluation of novel DNA methylation markers for early breast cancer detection from blood serum. UROP is a highly competitive, international program which only accepts 30 students annually. Sudha is currently advised by Professor Anant Madabhushi.

BME Professor George Shoane was recently invited to serve as an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering. He is responsible for reviewing manuscripts in his expertise: areas of vision research, biomedical instrumentation and biological control systems.

Professor David Shreiber has been officially appointed as the MD/PhD Program liaison for Rutgers. The MD/PhD program involves UMDNJ, RWJMS, Rutgers and Princeton and recruits about 3 students per year which makes it extremely competitive. His duties include admissions, recruiting and mentoring the MD/PhD students during the PhD years.

Dr. James Monaco, PhD, Assistant Research Professor, LCIB, Department BME, has been awarded a Burroughs Wellcome Fund 2011 Collaborative Research Travel Grant for his project entitled "Pathology Training and Collaboration between Rutgers and University of Michigan". As part of this $7k award, Dr. Monaco will spend 6 weeks at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in Dr. Ul Balis`s lab working on digital pathology problems. ProfessorAnant Madabhushi will serve as a collaborator on this project.

Rachel Sparks, a 4th year LCIB, BME PhD student has been awarded a 1 year, $20,000 fellowship from the Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine (SIIM) for her grant proposal entitled "Automated Content-Based Image Retrieval System for Gleason Grading on Prostate Histopathology". Rachel is advised by Professor Anant Madabhushi.

BME Professor John K-J. Li was awarded an IEEE 125th Anniversary Merit Certificate in appreciation of his outstanding contribution and service to the Engineering in Medicine and Biology (EMBS). He has been Theme, Track and Session chairs in many of the IEEE-EMBS international conferences and serving as EMBS Chapter Chairman.

Professor Anant Madabhushi has been featured for his work on the severity of prostate cancers using non-invasive magnetic resonance imaging. New developments could reduce biopsies. His work was featured on August 10th in Rutgers Today.

BME and LCIB Graduate Students Shannon Agner and Rachel Sparks have been awarded a $500 stipend from the BMEIdea competition to develop their project on a computerized decision support system for detecting breast cancer on MRI. They will now develop and finalize their product that will be judged on technical and economic feasibility, clinical utility, market potential, novelty, and potential for commercialization. This project is supervised by Dr. Anant Madabhushi.
