Professor Stavroula Sofou will be joining the departments of BME and CBE in January 2011 as an associate professor. She has been awarded the A. Walter Tyson Professorship Award. This award was recently given by a 1952 alumnus of Engineering and Professor Sofou is the inaugural recipient. Each year, a new recipient will receive the award.

IbRiS, a startup company, founded jointly by Rutgers BME faculty, Professor Anant Madabhushi and Dr. James Monaco, was featured in a story on U.S. 1 newspaper (article). The aim of this company is to develop a computerized image analysis program that will help identify those women with ER+ breast cancer who do not require adjuvant chemotherapy, over and above standard hormonal therapy.

Professor Martin Yarmush's research in the area of bionanorobotics is highlighted as a cover article in the November issue of the journal "IEEE Transactions on Nanotechnology". The article entitled, "Biological Force Measurement in a Protein-Based Nanoactuator" describes the mechanical force exerted by a nanoactuator due to pH actuation from a statistical mechanics and free energy of conformational change viewpoint.

Shoshana Rosskamm, First year LCIB, BME PhD student has been awarded UC-Denver's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Outstanding M.S. Award-the highest award granted by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at graduation. Shoshana came to Rutgers BME from UC-Denver and is currently advised by Dr. Anant Madabhushi.

Satish Viswanath, LCIB member and BME 5th year graduate student, has been recommended for a DOD Fellowship (pending availability of additional DOD funds). Satish will be working on his project "Computer aided diagnosis for identification of aggressive prostate cancer using multi-parametric MRI" under the supervision of Dr. Anant Madabhushi.

Rachel Sparks, LCIB member and BME 4th year graduate student, has been awarded a 3 year, $95k predoctoral DOD fellowship for her project "Fusion of MRI and TRUS for prostate cancer detection". Rachel will be working under the supervision of Dr. Anant Madabhushi to develop image registration tools for aligning MRI, ultrasound, and histopathology.

The Aresty Research Center for Undergraduates (ARC) has awarded research grants to several BME undergraduate students. These awards are made possible by the late Jerome and Lorraine Aresty who feel that research is very important to a student's experience at Rutgers.
